Steps to Making a Claim

Here are some steps to follow that can make the process run smoothly:

Contact the Appropriate Authorities

In the event of an accident or other emergency, immediately report the incident to the appropriate authorities (police, fire, ambulance, etc.) Even if there is no danger of personal injury such as in a case of vandalism or theft, it is best to file a report as soon as possible. Make sure you keep a note of the Incident Report reference number.

Take All Reasonable Steps to Prevent Further Damage

If it is safe to do so, do everything possible to prevent further damage or damage to other property (i.e. turning off water to a burst pipe, removing excess water, drying carpets, moving furniture, etc.)

Contact Smith and Associates Insurance

Contact our Smith and Associates Insurance office as soon as possible. Be prepared to give us as much detail as you can, including the following:

  • Date and time of incident.
  • Description of what happened.
  • Injuries if any.
  • Information involving any other party involved in the loss (name, address, phone number, and insurance information).
  • Incident Report reference number.

Your broker will make an initial assessment regarding coverage and report claim to an adjuster, who will assess damage and complete the insurance claim.

If calling after hours, you may choose to contact your insurance company directly. We have provided the following contact numbers for your reference.
